La Porticella
Between the villages of Motta Camastra and Francavilla di Sicilia lies the comfortable rural house La Porticella. From a provincial road that leads from the coast to Francavilla di Sicilia you come upon a gravel road road lined by old olive-trees. Halfway along this road there’s the access to the house in the ancient surrounding lava stone wall: La Porticella. An original, recently reconstructed rural house for a maximum of 6 persons.
The interesting volcanic area where the house stands has been formed by a volcanic eruption tens of thousands of years ago. The small river ‘San Paolo’ flows only a stones throwaway through a small gorge in the volcanic rock and the house has been built against the slope of an old lava flow.
The architecture had to adapt obviously, so there are buildings on, over, or around the lava, or they had to be integrated. You will discover many lava rock elements in and around the house.
The sunny kitchen come living room is a few steps higher than the ground floor, while two of the three bedrooms are on the floor below. The spacious living room has a view all around of the varied landscape and has a cozy fireplace. There’s even a pizza oven!
Also on this floor there’s a bedroom with a kingsize bed. On the lower floor there are two bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed. This bedroom has its own small terrace. The other bedroom (suitable for children) has a bunk bed. The bathroom is also located on this floor.
From all rooms you have a wonderful view of the luscious Alcantara Valley (the famous waterfall fall made of slate is nearby) and the surrounding mountains as far as the Ionian sea. There’s also a splendid view of the village of Motta Camastra. This village was the model for Corleone in the film ` The Godfather’.
Much of the garden is terraced and it has a small swimming pool (5mt x 6mt), a wonderful place to play and for a refreshing plunge. There’s an outside shower and a beautiful Sicilian ceramic sink ideal for barbecues!
Electricity, gas for cooking, hot and cold water are of course present. There is also a washing machine. Bedlinen is provided and you only have to bring towels for personal use.
